About UL

The University of Ljubljana (UL) is the largest university and research institution in Slovenia, and a leading centre of education, research and innovation in the country. Founded in 1919, UL brings together 26 faculties and academies and a broad spectrum of expertise spanning the natural sciences, engineering, humanities, social sciences, medicine and the arts.

With approximately 38,000 students and more than 7,000 academic, research and professional staff, UL provides a strong interdisciplinary environment for research and doctoral training. Its research profile combines fundamental and applied research, with extensive international collaboration across European and global research networks.

Within UL, the Faculty of Chemistry and Chemical Technology (FCCT) provides a particularly strong scientific environment for the project. FCCT has approximately 200 employees and hosts the Doctoral School in Chemical Sciences, currently training around 78 doctoral researchers. The faculty provides expertise in analytical chemistry, materials science and advanced analytical methods to investigate the composition, condition, degradation and conservation of cultural heritage materials.

The GreenHer Centre of Excellence (GreenHer CoE) is the first Slovenian research centre dedicated to interdisciplinary green heritage science within a collaborative European partnership. It operates as an autonomous unit of the University of Ljubljana and brings together expertise and infrastructure for research, education and innovation in cultural heritage.

GreenHer CoE aims to become a leading hub for research and innovation in heritage science and to contribute to the green and digital transition of the heritage sector through collaboration with policymakers, industry, academia and heritage stakeholders. Its research activities cover four complementary areas: Green Conservation-Restoration and Built Heritage; Sustainable Landscapes and Heritage Management; Values and Participatory Engagement; and Digital Heritage.

For the UNCHANGE project, the combination of GreenHer CoE’s heritage-science expertise with the analytical and computational capabilities available within the FCCT/UL provides a strong interdisciplinary environment for investigating the mechanisms, monitoring and visualisation of change in cultural heritage materials.

GreenHer CoE/UL provides access to extensive research and teaching facilities and analytical infrastructure relevant to the UNCHANGE project, including:

  • VNIR and SWIR hyperspectral imaging
  •  3D optical microscopy
  • Climate chambers and microfading instrumentation
  • FTIR, NIR and XRF spectroscopy, chromatography and colorimetry
  • Computational methods and data-analysis facilities for processing and modelling multimodal heritage-science data;
  • Historical Reference Material Collection containing several thousand historical samples of paper, parchment, ink, photographs, and plastics, supporting experimental studies and method validation.
