About SNM
The Swiss National Museum (SNM) is an institution that comprises three museums, each with exhibition space, in addition to a collection centre. The museums showcase the history of Switzerland from its beginnings up to the present day, providing insight into the Swiss identity and the rich tapestry of the country’s history and culture. Moreover, the museum hosts numerous temporary exhibitions on contemporary issues on an annual basis. The purpose of these contributions is to inform and stimulate public debate.
In the UNCHANGE project, the SNM will be represented by the Collection Centre, a cutting-edge facility that houses the conservation and restoration laboratories, the conservation research laboratory, and the storage rooms for almost one million objects. The Collection is distinguished by its extensive array of materials, encompassing textiles, metals, wood, glass, and ceramics, among others. A notable highlight of the Collection is the presence of numerous detached wall paintings, which further enhances its diversity and aesthetic appeal. Fifty experts specializing in the fields of conservation, conservation research and analytics are actively engaged in on-site work.
Three research scientists work at the Conservation Research Laboratory, and have been involved in a number of European projects. The research facilities include photographic equipment (UV, IR and VIS-light), microscopic work stations, spectrocolorimeter, micro and portable XRF-, Raman- and FTIR- spectroscopy. In addition, workshops for conservation-restoration are available.
