About HES-SO

University of Applied Sciences and Arts Western Switzerland (HES-SO) is the largest university of applied sciences (UAS) in Switzerland and the third largest higher education institution of the country, with more than 21’000 students and 28 schools in 7 cantons. HES-SO is organised in six faculties: Design & Visual Arts, Business Management & Services, Engineering & Architecture, Music & Performing Arts, Health and Social Work, and education and research are oriented towards practical applications in the same areas. It employs more than 21’000 collaborators, with approximately 1150 FTE dedicated to R&D activities. It undertakes research projects with a wide range of partners, in Switzerland and abroad.

HES-SO has been involved in European Framework Programmes since 1998. In Horizon 2020, it participated in 45 collaborative projects across all three pillars of the programme, including the MSCA-ITN CHANGE project, and coordinated 6 of these projects. In Horizon Europe, it is participating in 40 projects as associated partner and 9 as beneficiary.

In UNCHANGE, HES-SO will be represented by Haute Ecole Arc Conservation-restauration (HE-Arc CR) in Neuchâtel. The research group has a relevant tradition in cutting-edge research in the field of conservation science, focusing in particular on composite objects, metal corrosion, documentation and diagnosis using non-invasive, portable vibrational spectroscopic methods, electrochemistry and green chemistry.

HE-Arc CR is fully equipped to investigate heritage artefacts with optical and 3D microscopy, spectrophotometry, UV-Vis imaging (micro and macro scale), Reflectance Transformation Imaging (RTI) including a lightning dome, portable X-ray Fluorescence (XRF), chemical imaging with μ-FTIR (Fourier Transform InfraRed) and μ-Raman, IR thermography, acoustic emission, electrochemical techniques, climatic chamber for accelerated ageing tests. SEM-EDX, XRF mapping, confocal microscopy, profilometry, ellipsometry and other surface preparation and characterization methods are available in the Engineering department of HE-Arc institute.
